I accompanied him on his school picnic at the Marina Barrage yesterday. It was the N2s’ and K1s’ turn to host, and I was informed by the Teacher that my son picked cupcakes as the food of choice. And so I set about trying to find cupcakes which fit the national day theme.
Anyway, I had fun seeing all the children laugh and play.
They played games of catch by taking turns to drop the handkerchief on the target.. (i think i played this when i was young too, but i forgot the name of the game!)
Water-play was next and it was great to see Christian get into the water without fearing it, as he usually would be when it’s just P and I around with him.
It was also refreshing to see my son interact with his peers. The way he behaves around them is quite different from the way he is around us. He can be loud and attention-seeking with us, but with them, he is a leader whom other children follow and chase after. It is really very cute to see others lean their arm on his crossed leg, and to overhear their conversations of “do you like the jelly, Daryl?” “come and sit with me, Christian..” ^_^
I also managed to have informal chats with the parents and teachers..picked up tips on parent volunteering from a parent, and told her how grateful I was to have had her recommendation of this school. Teacher D looked pleased as punch when I told her how Christian chanted “S… I-N… G-A-P-O-R-E!” and how his grandfather ran out of the room exclaiming, “He can spell Singapore!!!!” She told me Christian had settled well in school, is decoding words with phonics very well and she will let him progress on the readers faster according to his own pace instead of following the planned schedule for the class. She has also asked that he help his friends in reading, and he seems to be attacking his role with relish, while his friend doesn’t seem to mind too. “D, this is the word ‘bucket’. Point…! See. Say the word ‘bbbbucket’.”
It was a fun outing…and I feel tempted to book a place in this school for Calista too, although there are still 2 more years before she can enter.
