I didn’t realise it because we joined mid-term last term, but his school gives feedback on the targeted skills for every child, for every theme that lasts about a month.
The theme for 25th Jun – 27th Jul was “Creepy Crawlies”, and this is what Teacher D had to say -
Language Skills
Theme
Christian enjoyed the theme very much. He understood the vocabulary and applied them effectively during all theme activities. He could recognise and read the labels when completing follow up activities on the parts of an insect and arachnid. He was also able to talk about how creepy crawlies were helpful or harmful. He shared his ideas confidently and spontaneously.
Jolly Phonics
Christian liked all the songs related to the digraphs. (I have no idea what digraphs are..time to go educate myself.) He was able to work on 3-4 letters word blends confidently. He also showed comprehension of the words blended when he explained their meanings.
Oxford Reading Tree Programme
Christian could read the readers without difficulties. He was consistent at recognising and reading the high frequency words and new vocabulary. He did well at his reading reviews and assessments when given word cards and sentence strips to work with.
Listening Comprehension Skills, Expressive and Oral Communicative Skills
Christian enjoyed the stories and listened to them attentively throught the theme. He asked questions about the insects’ behaviour and talked about his knowledge of them spontaneously. Christian did well for his Show ‘n’ Tell. He spoke with clarity as he shared what he had learned about the Firefly. As he was also keen to learn about other insects, he listened attentively to his classmates when they talked about their insect of choice.
Songs and Rhymes
Christian liked the songs/ rhymes taught in relation to the theme. He was, however, shy at singing or reciting them alone when asked to do so for his classmates. But he had no difficulties singing/reciting along with them.
Mathematical Skills
Christian showed good visual discrimination and perception when he listed the specifics of similarities/ differences in the set of pictorial objects given. In his number skills, he counted with care & comprehended the concept of Tens / Units for numbers 11 – 15. He could also count on from 10 for numbers from 11- 19 with ease.
[The above seems fine so far, but the 2nd part of the report is not so positive..we’ve got more work to do in terms of his Motor, social skills, emotional development and self-help skills. =S]
Motor Skills
Christian has taken to playing with the swing car during outdoor play. He has tried working on the training BMX but found it “difficult”. He is getting better at balancing on one foot in a standing still pose and hopping.
Christian has been taught the formation for writing numbers 1- 5. He had been diligent at holding his pencil correctly, mindful of applying pressure to write, and exercised patience at completing his table work exercises. He will do better as he develops better dexterity and strength in his hands.
He was marked as “Needs Practice” for the following fields: “Hold writing tools correctly”, “Apply sufficient pressure on writing tools”.
Social Skills
Christian can share toys/ resources without being asked. He likes playing with his classmates. As he can get excited during his play activities, he needed reminders to handle the toys with care. He has been taught that throwing or scattering them is unsafe for himself and others.
For the fields of “speak/interact with good manners”, “taking care and using toys/resources with care”, and “comprehend the meaning of inappropriate behaviour – eg. throw toys, wipe dirty hands on clothes”, he was marked as “Needs Practice”.
Emotional Development
As he gets excited, his voice volume would also increase. He has been reminded to be mindful of lessons going on in the other room. Christian is still shy when being told of his inappropriate behaviour. He is working at being open to mediation in such situations.
For the fields of “I can have better self-control”, “accept mediation when making mistake” and “i can say ‘sorry’ when I have done something inappropriate”, he is marked as “Needs Practice”.
Self-Help skills
Christian is getting better at using toilet paper to clean himself, washing his hands thoroughly and flushing the toilet after use. He is working at being responsible for his belongings with less reminders.
“Needs Practice” for “Use tissue without reminders”, “Wash hands thoroughly without reminders” and “Flush toilet after use”.
Oh dear.

Nonetheless, reading all these and seeing the work he has done in the past month, I told P that I think my greatest achievement of this year as a mother is not finding a new job, but having found this school for Christian. ^_^
